Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Renewable Energy Industry
This panel will dive into the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) challenges in the renewable energy field. We will explore real-world industry practices, including the virtual conference platform technology used at OSEC. Digitalization of business and linkage to the rollout of clean technology provides an opportunity to design innovations to be more inclusive and avoid the "source code error" of embedding inequities into advanced energy technology and communications.

While jobs in the renewable energy fields continue to grow at a rapid pace according to the IREA, women and people of color still can't seem to break through the "PV" ceiling. Finally, alliances are starting to form to try to address a cultural shift in the RE field, and many organizations are launching their own internal DEI teams and even fully employed positions.

This team of panelists will talk about their own personal and professional challenges and also share the innovative successes of moving in this direction with intention and thoughtfulness. We hope to have an open discussion from multiple perspectives and engage the audience around this sensitive and yet vitally important topic.

How I Increased Referrals by 344%
For solar installers, referrals are the most cost effective way to get new customers. Here’s the catch: about eighty-three percent of satisfied customers are willing to give a referral, but only twenty-nine percent actually do. That’s a huge gap. This session outlines a three-step program that solar installers can use to close the gap and dramatically increase referrals. When I implemented the program for one of my clients, their referrals swelled by 344%, or about seven percent every month, for twenty-four consecutive months.

Load management for whole-home battery backup
Rooftop solar is a technology that promises to power homes with clean, renewable sunshine AND save money. However, solar alone cannot power a home during a grid outage, leaving the solar customer vulnerable when the grid goes down. System owners have turned to energy storage to overcome these challenges. Although solar + storage systems are becoming more powerful, most energy storage systems are only capable of powering a couple of appliances for a few hours during a power outage, and powering the whole home requires a prohibitively expensive multi-battery installation. In this webinar, learn how to design a cost effective solar + storage system for whole home backup power using load management technology.

An Introduction to Virtual Power Plants
Utilities across the country are beginning to tap into hundreds, sometimes thousands, of devices in homes and businesses to create virtual power plants (VPP). These VPPs can deliver many of the same services as traditional power plants but they’re power by distributed resources, including water heaters, smart thermostats, and, increasingly, solar and battery storage. This session will cover the basics of what a virtual power plant is and how it can create value for both utilities and customers, with examples from real-world programs.

Presenters will include the software company Virtual Peaker and Portland General Electric (PGE). PGE recently launched a new VPP pilot program that will incentivize the installation of more than 500 residential battery storage systems, representing up to four megawatts of energy.
